Callings

‘”What are you willing to give up to ensure your own unfolding, and the unfolding of what is holy in your life?”

Last week I traveled to Spokane, Washington for the Mind, Body Spirit Holistic Fair. I had a wonderful time and met so many great like-minded friends. As I presented my “Change Your Thoughts…Change Your Life” lecture, I could see and feel the enthusiasm and eagerness of those in attendance. We are all searching for answers, guidance and knowledge to live the best we can be.

The many visitors who came to my booth for channeled messages, guidance and healing in their lives seemed to have much in common. In retrospect, the intriguing part is that most of the questions were very similar. “What is my path in this life?” and “What am I supposed to be doing with my life?”

Those questions brought to mind the teachings of this wonderful book I read quite some time ago. As we search and ask what we should be doing, oftentimes when we receive the answers we become fearful about that change. Thoughts about what we might be called to sacrifice, deprive ourselves of, inconvenience from changes in life.

“Sacrifice is an essential fact of life however, not an isolated act of appeasement. Rock eventually crumbles and becomes dirt that feeds plants. Grain is crushed to make flour. Snow melts to become water that nourishes the earth and makes for good river rafting in the spring.”

I remind you of the small sacrifices we make in our daily lives. A small surrender may be merely the letting go of a bad mood, feeling as if we got up on the wrong side of the bed, forgiving a friend for an unintended slight, or doing the dishes for our mate who’s had a really bad day (even though it’s not our turn). Letting another driver go ahead of us in traffic, giving someone “cuts” in the long grocery line. We are constantly making a choice or a compromise, parting with fear and saying the truth in a moment, spending time with our children instead of working late again.

So when you think about it, we do surrender and sacrifice every day. Of course there are the larger sacrifices we may be called to do. As each of you ask what is your path, journey or lesson in this life, you are in a place of aligning with the answer to your query and are beginning to align with some sort of surrender being created in your life.

Remember that where ever you are, what ever you are doing, no matter the status of your health, relationships or the abundance in your life, you have chosen it. You are where you are supposed to be - right now! I’ve heard it so many times: “there is no right or wrong, good or bad, better than, lesser than…all just is.”

Another amazing discovery came to me that day in Spokane. Every person on whose behalf I asked of Divine Guidance for direction, was either told they are a teacher or a healer. As the day progressed I became more aware of this and questioned my ‘self’’. I asked Spirit if I was completely focused, was I absorbing from some other reader in the room, was there somehow something I was not getting? The answer was loud and clear: “You are receiving what we are sending through you to this person. Please continue” The only exception to the stream of teachers and healers, was one individual who was given the message of a ‘minister’. The unique part of that reading, to me, is that person is already a healer by profession.

“Sacrifice… is Jonah leaping overboard, which seems like madness, yet often in following our own calls, we’re told by others that we’re crazy. At some level, we, too, have to make an ultimate sacrifice to our callings. Only when you try your vision in the world can you test whether it’s true.”

I know I’m not being called to jump off a ship, into the ocean and get swallowed by an Orca whale! Of course not! Several years ago when I first began to receive messages for my clients, sometimes I felt as if I was doing that very thing. I would think: “I can’t say that!”, “What will they think of me?” or “That’s just too weird and it makes no sense.” Fortunately, I reached a place where God/Source/Spirit left me no options. I would physically feel my heart pound, my pulse race and my face would become flushed and hot. The very moment that I shared the guidance with my client, all the physical discomfort was gone! In addition, I would feel a beautiful peaceful calm come over me.

As we are present at a class or retreat, among other like-minded souls, feeling safe and open and aware of expansion and solitude, new inspiration seems exciting. And yet, in the light of actuality and the more practical matters of paying the rent, going to work, and taking care of children and/or older parents can be overwhelming. What will our mate, our co-workers, friends and family think about us? It can be truly daunting.

So this parable of Jonah and the whale “is an inspired bit of symbolism. The only other time we are inside another’s belly is before birth, so the image reflects the anticipated birth that follows sacrifice. In that belly, drunk on evolutions, we’re not so much acting as being acted upon by Something Bigger than ourselves. It is our preparation before we are spilled forth into life, into the world, ready at last to carry out our missions.”

How can we know if a call is “true“? Usually the request keeps coming back. And it also may come to us through various means of communication. A good way to keep track of the assorted signals is to keep a journal of your dreams, fantasies, and ambitions. Are you preoccupied with any specific issues, fears, resistances that have been coming up to you lately? Perhaps unexpected opportunity suddenly appears in your life. Another signal is to observe what books are on your nightstand, what topics of conversation repeatedly turns up. I observed that whenever certain individuals are gathered for a study group, class or healing circle, whatever is the topic of discussion or focus, it is intended for each person in attendance. In some way, whatever course the evening takes, everyone there is meant to hear the message. It always is true! There are times when we don’t want to hear that, yet on some level of soul it is the truth.

Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul wrote that ”repression of the life-force” is the most common reason he sees people in therapy.

And so, I ask you to embrace your power. Live your passion. Be excited and enthusiastic about your life. Savor those moments of powerful guidance, intuition and direction from Source.
