Your Authentic Gifts

Your Authentic Gifts

In his book “The Four Agreements” don Miguel Ruiz writes about the Dreams of people. These dreams are made up of agreements we have made with both others and ourselves. The results of these agreements and beliefs are who we are, or our personality. So when we realize that our life isn’t what we’d like it to be, we change our Dream. By breaking from the old agreements, discarding beliefs that no longer serve us we begin to create, or Dream a new Dream.

To create that new Dream for our life, we begin with taking stock of who we are. We ask ourselves, “what do I have to work with?” What resources am I capable of calling upon to create this new Dream for myself?

And so, I ask you three questions:

What do you think are your authentic gifts?

Do you believe you have any?

And, are you using them?

Remember, each day is the beginning of a new life for you. And you are the creator of that life and that reality, that Dream. So begin to imagine. Look at your life and your world in a different way.

A fun way to begin this process is to do things differently. A good starting place is with your morning routine. Upon arising if you usually make coffee, read your email and get in the shower, switch things around and get in the shower first, then have your coffee. If you take the same route to work every day, mix it up a little. By taking side streets and not the freeway, or an alternate route, you’ll see a different area. It might be fun to take a city bus or ride a bike instead of driving. And who know what authentic gift might come to you!

A few years ago one of my teachers challenged me, for one week, to live my life opposite. What an eye opening experience that was! I discovered I even had the same morning shower routine every day and it took conscious effort to switch it around. I was using the same teacup and the same cereal bowl every morning. I ate lunch at the same time whether I was really hungry or not! After a couple days I really got into the game and had lots of fun with it; it became a challenge to find new ways to do the same things.

On a deeper level, this simple game lets your mind know things are going to be different from now on. As we get more enthusiastic and excited about the possibilities, that spills over into the bigger picture of life. You will begin to realize you can be free to become whatever you desire. Whatever changes you wish to make, will be easier. And most of all, you will be creating what you want for your life.

Sometimes unexpectedly we find our authentic gifts along the way. We may begin to realize a positiveness in our life and through that joy comes healing, many times on all levels. We begin to see more good in others and potential in all people. As we become happier, compassionate and kind, we share that with others. We begin to recognize our ability to make people happy and feel good. We radiate a loving acceptance to those around us.

As a parent, we will be able to show our children, by example, the way to live a happy life. Being a trustworthy parent to our family members is a shining model for the little ones. Bringing our authentic self forward and dreaming new ways is one of the most essential tools we can teach.

Perhaps you will find magic in your life and celebrate life. Maybe you have the gift of laughter and a good sense of humor. Laughter is one of the greatest healing techniques there is. A big, deep belly laugh is an grand experience. If you’ve always wanted to dance and sing, do it! Who cares if you feel silly - you never know what opening up that gift will bring for you.

If you could be, do or have anything, what would you want? Money, age, education, sex, race, up-bringing, society, family ties - none of that matters. I’ve asked this question of clients and students over the years, and I love their answers. Have you seen the movie “The Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman? Two terminally ill men meet in the hospital and create their lists of what they want to do before they ‘kick the bucket’.

Take some time this week to create an Authentic Gift’s List, incorporating it with your Bucket List. Really, the two go hand-in-hand. For as we discover our unique gifts we often find revealed the things we’ve always wanted to do. Begin right now to create your own, unique new Dream.
