Here in northwest Montana we’ve been joking about the “Lion vs. Lamb” weather predictor. The early months of spring here haven’t been very lamb-like so far. I’m eagerly awaiting the disappearance of the piles of snow and emergence of bare ground. At this point, the option of green grass isn’t even so important as no white on the ground!
This brought me to the concept of how we live our lives. The whole "in like a lion, out like a lamb" March weather concept sort of paints the lion in a bad light, doesn't it? The lion represents viciousness: whipping winds, extreme cold, ferociousness—things which most people, by this point in the season, are happy to be rid of.
But let's give the lion his due. If you were to get in a fight, who would you want on your side—the lion or the lamb? It's a pretty safe bet that the lion is a much more practical teammate to have. While the lambs are running for the hills, the lions are right up in front, fighting the good fight! Lion-hearted warriors are very brave, courageous defenders of truth and right. In other words, it's okay—valiant even—to be a lion sometimes. You have the right to get what you want, and with the strength, daring and ferocity of the lion, you will. As you become all about channeling your inner lion what do you see yourself portraying?
Most of us like the warmer months better, and the emergence of the lamb-like conditions conveys that gentler weather. We think of soft, warm and gentle breezes, new budding on trees and bushes, fragrance of new green grass and bulbs pushing up through the ground. Gentle rains that soak into the fresh-tilled garden soil emit that growth-like fragrance promising newness. A lamb reminds us of somebody meek and mild: a gentle and innocent person, especially a baby or small child. Those people who are lamb-like are calm, playful, easy going, seemingly without resistance to life’s challenges. These are the ones we say who “Go with the flow”. But what about your inner lamb? When you use this approach how is your life playing out?
While some people do better with a more ferocious approach to their life situations, a lot of it has to do with your personality type and what you're hoping to accomplish. Lions are great, but some people do better keeping it calm and steady.
Fortunately, there's no right or wrong here. Whether you're a Type A or a Type B, an introvert or extrovert, it really doesn't matter. When you find what works right for you and stick with it, your life will change in wondrous ways.
If there’s one thing we can get out of today's lion vs. lamb concept, it's that there's rarely just one way of doing things. So this week observe how you live your day-to-day life. Do you mostly embrace life as a lamb? Or do you find the lion attitude works better for you? Check in with your self during the day, taking notice whether you’re a lion or a lamb. Whether you choose to go at situations aggressively or more subtly, it all comes down to what works for you.
Know yourself and go with that.
The Bible says: “the lion shall lie down with the lamb” Although this phrase of is one of the more popular quotes from the Bible, it’s really misquoted. In the King James version, it’s the wolf that dwells with the lamb, and it’s a leopard that lies down with a kid, and “the calf and the young lion and the fatling together.” (Isaiah 11:6)
Metaphysically this quote teaches that the lion part of us and the lamb portion shall blend together as one, bringing our spirit, mind and body into alignment. As we focus on bringing our courageous, brave warrior-spirit in balance with our softer, lamb-like traits of loving kindness, caring generosity and child-like innocence, our essence becomes more God-like. Spiritually, this coming to a balance in our core, inner being will bring healing both within and without.
